Extended experience reveals distinct representational dynamics governing the CA1 spatial code

Hippocampal subregion CA1 is thought to support episodic memory through reinstatement of a stable spatial code. However, recent calcium imaging experiments demonstrate that the majority of this code changes rapidly, thus challenging this presumed function. Here we show that the mouse CA1 spatial code contains distinct representational components mediated by separate neural ensembles with different long-term dynamics, including a persistent representation of spatial geometry and prior experience.
